I was just thinking about how I read this article about how mirrors changed how we looked at our lives and so I was thinking “What about smartphones?” How do they change the way we see ourselves.
The mirror allowed people to look at their appearance and think about themselves as another person. Some people believe that this lead to the psychological novel and we know it gave rise to the great self portrait.
I think having a smartphone allows people to look at their LIVES as if they belong to someone else. We can pick out the coolest bits and share them with the world, and then bask in the joy of how COOL we are. This can even lead to making decisions based on what would look good instead of what you want. Now choosing that way sounds bad but it can actually lead to some surprisingly fun experiences. The problem seems to come in if we get to obsessed with documenting our lives so that we miss out on living them. People probably had problems with mass produced mirrors at first thought. They probably said “look at today’s youth, always looking in the mirror and never being responsible or polit. What is the world coming to?!” And really, we don’t remember them as being all that bad. I think smartphones will work out in the end as well. Someday, if might be grandma whose always on her phone at family functions.
I don’t know about anyone else but the only reason I use my phone in public is that I’m board or feel awkward. I guess it’s kind of like a crutch for my self esteem issues
